The Permaculture Design Course 2024 at Butambala Permaculture Learning Center has yet brought another series of its workshops aimed at enlightening farming community members on how to understand the true meaning of Permanent -Culture to achieve future resilience.Topics shall include ;ways on how to achieve freedom through cultural autonomy,diversity,improved social well-being of humans animals and environment as part of the ecosystem.
Using agroecology,authentic organic practices ,regenerative agriculture,agroforesty,syntropic farming systems etc all are embedded in a holistic approach while working with nature rather than against.
Ecology through food growing forexamples food forest systems integrated trees,woodlands.This is part of the systems thinking ,ecosystem restoration,DIY,local economies and more.
Water in the landscape,biological dams ,ditches, swales, terraces,irrigation,waste water,water conservation and water harvesting.
Permaculture is a holistic system of design that integrates the study and application of various indigenous knowledge systems.The natural and social sciences,building and architecture,humanities,enterpreneurship and ethics are accessible and practical design work for regenerative living in a modern era.The concept was coined by Bill Mollison and his student David Holmgren in Australia during the 1970’s in response to pressing environmental issues during that decade.Permaculture design principles are universal and can be applied in many different cultures and ecosystems. Its scope is comprehensive and its techniques of design can be applied in homes,offices,hospitals,schools,prisons,gardens,farms,communities,towns and cities.
Course Goals
The course is designed to open the eyes of the student to critical environmental issues and problems in the country,world.To address these problems the student will be trained in the course to use systems thinking as the guiding paradigm in the design of innovative and practical solutions.The discussions are mostly based on basic principles from earth science,biology,environmental science and agriculture.
At the end of the course students should be able to;
