Growing Food, Growing Futures : Kakubo UMEA School Lead the Way in Permaculture
At Kakubo UMEA Primary School in Butambala , something inspiring is happening.
a group of bright , hopeful students have come together to do more that just learn- they are growing food to nourish themselves and their community.
Through our school permaculture program, these students are cultivating vegetables like cabbages which they mix with their daily bean soup , improving the nutrition and variety of their school lunches.
A Garden with a Purpose
Each member of the school permaculture club is given one vegetable plant to care for – their own small piece of responsibility, growth, and pride. These young growers water, weed, and protect their crops with care, learning firsthand:
- The value of organic food growing
- How to enhance their school diet naturally
- The power of working together for a shared goal
” I take care of my cabbage like its my own little baby”, says Nazziwa Zaharah 11 year old , smiling to her thriving plant”
Why It Matters : Food Security Starts With Young People
In rural Ugandan schools, lunch is basic – often only posho and beans, with little to no vegetables. But at Kakubo UMEA, this student-led school garden is changing that.
With the support of Butambala Permaculture Learning Center and Friends, Well-wishers , the children are learning how to :
- Practice sustainable agriculture
- Reduce malnutrition in schools
- Build skills that can serve their families and futures
- Conserve soil and water while growing food organically
This is real-life education, rooted in the soil and growing new possibilities everyday.
